We both really enjoyed completing this project. We found it worthwhile and we feel like we have learned a lot from the experience. It was very interesting to read articles on and learn about families different than ours. We found the challenges nontraditional families face that we ourselves didn't face growing up because of our more traditional families particularly interesting. We have both learned a lot from this project and will definitely use this information in our future classrooms.
This issue is one that our professional mentors may not have a lot of experience with. Even 25 years ago divorce and being LGBT were both brushed under the rug and acceptance of children of nontraditional families was certainly not taught in schools. Today however, with divorce rates staying steady at around 50% and more and more LGBT couples raising children, we as teachers need to be prepared to offer our support to students of nontraditional families and create school wide awareness of the unique issues and insights of
